DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT
DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT in Jaipur
Molecular imaging for neuroendocrine tumours
DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT is a specialized molecular imaging scan primarily used for the evaluation of neuroendocrine tumours (NETs). It uses a radiolabelled somatostatin analogue that targets somatostatin receptors, which are commonly expressed by many neuroendocrine tumours.
The PET scan identifies areas of tracer uptake, while CT provides detailed anatomical localization.
When is DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT Used?
It may be useful for:
- Initial staging of neuroendocrine tumours
- Detecting primary and metastatic disease
- Evaluating lymph-node and bone involvement
- Assessing liver and other distant metastases
- Detecting residual or recurrent disease
- Selecting appropriate patients for somatostatin receptor–targeted radionuclide therapy, such as Lu-177 DOTATATE
What Can the Scan Show?
DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT can help determine:
- Where the primary tumour is located
- Whether disease has spread to lymph nodes or distant organs
- The extent of somatostatin-receptor expression
- Whether previously treated disease remains receptor-positive
- Whether the disease demonstrates molecular characteristics relevant to targeted radionuclide therapy
How Does It Work?
- 1
A small amount of a radiolabelled DOTA/DOTANOC tracer is administered intravenously.
- 2
After an appropriate uptake period, PET-CT images are acquired.
- 3
The PET component demonstrates somatostatin-receptor activity, while CT provides anatomical detail.
Preparation
Preparation is generally straightforward, but specific instructions depend on the tracer and protocol.
Patients should:
- Follow the centre's appointment instructions
- Maintain adequate hydration unless medically restricted
- Bring previous imaging and histopathology reports
- Inform the centre about current medications and treatment
- Inform the centre about ongoing long-acting or short-acting somatostatin analogue therapy, as timing may be relevant to the examination
DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT & Theranostics
DOTA/DOTANOC PET-CT can form an important part of the theranostic approach to neuroendocrine tumours.
Demonstration of adequate somatostatin-receptor expression may help identify patients who could be considered for peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), such as Lu-177 DOTATATE, when clinically appropriate.
Important Limitations
Not all neuroendocrine tumours express somatostatin receptors to the same degree. Some aggressive or poorly differentiated tumours may show limited receptor expression.
Tracer uptake can also occur in certain normal tissues and some non-neuroendocrine conditions.
Therefore, PET-CT findings should always be interpreted alongside histopathology, clinical history and previous imaging.
